How to Clean your Jewellery
5 steps to ensure your jewellery is sparkling as brightly as the day you bought it

There has always been conflicting information on how to clean your jewellery. Between dishwashing detergent, baking soda and ammonia… we’ve heard it all!
What’s the best method you may ask? None of the above!

The best method has and always will be a professionally made jewellery cleaning solution with an alcohol content above 60%. This is especially important for cleaning 18K gold jewellery with mounted diamonds.

Preventative Methods to Ensure Clean Jewellery

Before we begin, there are a fair number of preventative methods that can be used to ensure that your jewellery stays cleaner for longer.

-    Always take your jewellery off when going in the shower, the bath or washing your hands.
-    Remove jewellery when using hand-creams and other lotions that can get trapped underneath the stone.
-    Remove your rings when washing the dishes or when coming into contact with any harsh chemicals or cleaning products.
-    If you lead an active lifestyle, be sure to remove jewellery when exercising and find a style that is sturdy enough to match your lifestyle
-    Be sure to purchase and utilise a jewellery box to store any items of jewellery that have been removed. Be careful that jewellery items stored together do not scratch one another.
A common practice is to wear one’s engagement ring every day. It has been engrained into us that this is a symbol of our commitment to another person and we can’t remove it so long as we are married. However, what many people forget is that an engagement ring will always be a delicate form of fine jewellery. An item that should be worn with delicacy and care.

The same can be said for any antique or vintage jewellery as you will not know the current condition of the jewellery and the exact metals used in its production. Modern jewellery often allows the wearer to access the bottom of the stone for cleaning however, old jewellery often utilised a bezel setting that makes cleaning very hard. This makes it especially important to remove the jewellery when performing any of the actions listed above.

We are all guilty of leaving our jewellery on, I definitely am! Just remember that every time you leave it on is another day closer to a dull diamond!

5 Steps to Clean your Diamond Jewellery:
  1. Condition Check: Before cleaning your jewellery, you should check the overall condition of your ring. Are there any cracks? Scratches? Loose stones? The best way to check if your diamond is loose is to shake it next to your ear. If you hear movement of any kind then you should take the ring to your local jeweller to be assessed.
  2. Prepare a specified jewellery cleaning spray or warm soapy water: Use a jewellery cleaning spray with at least 60 – 70% alcohol content. Any reputable jeweller should be able to help you source a spray with similar qualities. These sprays can also be purchased online but please be aware of the ingredients used as some sprays could contain toxic chemicals.
  3. Evenly spray across your jewellery, making sure to spray underneath the setting: If you do not have access to a jewellery cleaning solution you can also use warm soapy water. Simply soak the ring in the soap solution and follow steps 3 and 4 to complete
  4. Brush underneath the setting and in hard to reach cavities: Use a soft bristled brush to swipe away any dust or dirt. The area’s most likely to store dirt are underneath the diamond, close to the setting. These are the areas to focus your brush work.
  5. Wipe away any lingering dust: Use a clean diamond cloth or soft fleece fabric to wipe away the remainder of the dust. Be careful not to use any form of cloth with a rough surface including cotton.
DO NOT …

-    Use any harsh or toxic detergents or chemicals when cleaning your jewellery
-    Be careful with all gemstones

Semi-precious gemstones or pearls should be handled with a lot more care and will have a different set of cleaning instructions. Most potent jewellery cleaning sprays and warm soapy water will not be suitable for semi-precious gemstones and pearls.
